Over the centuries, formal apprenticeship has been the main mechanism through which skilled trades such as shoemaking, weaving, carpentry and stone masonry have been learned. Guilds, too, have been in existence since the middle ages to protect the rights of local businessmen and to regulate trade. The wealth of surviving records of apprenticeship and of guild administration which Sarah Doig will explore in this talk gives a fascinating insight into how our ancestors were taught a trade and how, as established tradesmen, the guilds protected their livelihoods.
